Introduction to Towing

Do you want to tow a larger trailer, caravan or horsebox?

Whether you are new to towing, in need of a refresher or you need to pass your DVSA B+E Trailer Test we can offer you a range of training courses suitable for your personal requirements. Our instructors will ensure your vehicle and trailer combinations are suitable for your license and offer training to suit your needs where necessary.

The licensing regulations relating to towing are confusing to say the least, depending on when you passed your driving test you may need to take an additional test in order to tow a larger Trailer, Caravan or Horsebox.

The DVLA Website States*;

Car licences obtained before 1 January 1997

If you passed a car test before 1 January 1997 you keep your existing entitlement to tow trailers until your licence expires. This means you’re generally entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes maximum authorised mass (MAM). You also have entitlement to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750kgs MAM.

Car licences obtained on or after 1 January 1997

If you passed a car test on or after 1 January 1997 you are limited to driving vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes maximum authorised mass towing a trailer up to 750kgs. You are also entitled to drive a car and trailer combination up to 3.5 tonnes MAM providing the MAM of the trailer doesn’t exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle.

Put simply this means if you passed your practical driving test before 1st January 1997 then it’s likely you will  need some basic training in order to tow a caravan or trailer safely and legally, if however you passed your test on or after 1st January 1997 then you could well need to sit the full DVSA B+E Test.

Our instructors understand the legal requirements you must comply with to ensure you don’t fall foul of these confusing regulations.

We can provide you with an assessment of your intended vehicle and trailer combination then offer advice on any training or testing requirements specific to you.
